Additional Support with Wise Owls

Creating an inclusive environment

At Wise Owls Nursery School, we believe every child deserves to feel welcome, valued, and supported. We aim to build an environment where diversity is celebrated and barriers to inclusion are actively removed , whether those barriers are linked to bias, stereotyping, or negative attitudes.

High-quality, inclusive early years provision gives all children equal access to opportunities at the most important stage of their development. It helps them grow in confidence, understand and respect differences, and develop positive aspirations for the future.

Our nursery offers a safe, nurturing space where children, families, and staff can learn from one another, appreciate similarities and differences, and develop empathy and respect.

Applications for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)

At Wise Owls Nursery School, we believe that early intervention is key. We offer 27 month checks and regular opportunities for families and staff to discuss any concerns at any point throughout their time with us. Our SENDCo will signpost families with concerns and work to support them to get a referral or diagnosis where ever possible if appropriate.

Children with diagnosed Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) are supported by tailored strategies and advice from external professionals such as the Speech and Language team at Seaside View and Brighton and Hove Inclusion Support Service (BHISS).

If a child with a diagnosis needs a higher level of support when preparing for the transition to school we can ask the Local Authority to assess their needs and, where appropriate, apply for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). These families must have been working with BHISS and Seaside View prior to application.

Our SENDCo and the child’s key worker will guide families through this process, working closely with parents, specialist agencies, and if appropriate an Educational Psychologist to ensure the right support is in place for the transition. They will also talk with you about local school options to find the best setting for your child’s needs.

At Wise Owls, we aim to:

  • Celebrate every child’s individuality

  • Treat children and families with equality, kindness, and respect

  • Support all children, regardless of culture, language, gender, background, or additional need/disability

  • Make sure every child can take part in all aspects of nursery life

  • Provide resources that reflect and value each child’s background

  • Recognise that every child’s needs or diagnosis is unique to them
