Getting Ready for School
When school places are announced each spring, it’s exciting (and sometimes a little overwhelming!). If you’re thinking, “How is my little one starting school already?!” you’re not alone. At Wise Owls, we help make this big step smooth and positive. Our team focus on the everyday skills that help children feel happy, confident, and ready to thrive.
We support children in 4 key areas
-
Independence – dressing, toileting, eating with cutlery, and tidying up.
-
Communication & Friendships – listening, taking turns, sharing, and expressing feelings.
-
Physical Skills – balance, coordination, using scissors, holding pencils, and building strength through play.
-
Routines – feeling secure with daily rhythms like mealtimes, hygiene, and bedtime.
Every child is unique
Not all children will master everything before school – and that’s okay. Our role is to support your child’s development at their own pace, building confidence through play, encouragement, and positive relationships.
Together, we’ll help your little one take this exciting next step with curiosity, resilience, and a big Wise Owls smile!
Starting Reception
If you haven’t already, we recommend taking a look at Starting Reception a fantastic resource full of practical ideas and support to help parents prepare their child for starting school.
Many schools and early years settings have found this guide really helpful in explaining to parents what is expected and how they can support their child’s learning and independence at home.
You might also find the Starting School collections on the CBeebies Parenting website useful. They offer free, expert advice and fun activity ideas to help parents and caregivers support their child’s development and make the transition to school as smooth as possible.
